Dehradun police have arrested four individuals involved in the theft of Rs 13,000 from an Axis Bank ATM in Doiwala last Friday. Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh confirmed that a complaint was filed by Dinesh Kuniyal, the branch manager, stating that cash had been stolen from the ATM on October 7 and 8.
The theft was carried out using a clever trick: the suspects placed a dummy cash tray above the real tray inside the ATM, preventing customers from withdrawing money. After receiving the complaint, the police registered a case and launched an investigation.
The Kotwali Doiwala police team collected crucial evidence by reviewing footage from approximately 100 CCTV cameras in the area. Additionally, the informer system was activated, helping identify the suspects.
Based on this investigation, the four suspects were apprehended near Purana Tiraha Lakshman Siddh Temple. They were identified as Gaurav Chauhan (21) from Dehradun, Aman Kumar (25) from Delhi, and Rohit Punj and Jitendra Singh, also from Delhi. The police recovered Rs 13,000 in stolen cash from a suspicious four-wheeler in their possession.
During questioning, the suspects admitted that they had planned the ATM thefts after watching tutorial videos on YouTube. They crafted dummy cash trays resembling real ones and placed them over actual trays in various ATMs.
The accused had targeted Axis Bank ATMs in the Raipur and Rajpur areas and had plans to extend the scheme to other districts. Their operation was foiled when Dehradun police arrested them before further thefts could occur.
