A man from Haryana, Deepak Kumar, was arrested on Tuesday evening in connection with an online fraud involving a fake e-challan, through which Rs60,000 was stolen from a vehicle owner in Bengal.
According to the Kolkata Police Cyber Wing, the victim received a link claiming to be from the mParivahan app, asking him to pay a traffic fine. Once the link was clicked, the money was deducted from his bank account.
Authorities revealed that Kumar, along with at least six others, had been sending phishing messages containing links to a fake e-challan since last September. The fraud prompted Kolkata Traffic Police to warn motorists via social media against malicious links claiming traffic fines, emphasizing that official fines are never collected this way.
Investigation showed that a fraudulent “mParivahan” APK file was hosted on servers linked to IntechDC Support Team. Tracing the IP addresses and email accounts led police to Deepak Kumar in Jhajjar, Haryana. Notices were issued, and after multiple rounds of questioning at Lalbazar, he was arrested.
The police have advised the public to avoid clicking suspicious links and report any fraudulent messages immediately.
