The Cyber Crime Police Station of UT Chandigarh has arrested 28-year-old Deepak, son of Suresh Kumar, for his alleged involvement in two major online investment frauds that collectively cheated city residents of over Rs 1.6 crore.
The first FIR, registered on May 2, 2025, was based on a complaint by a resident who, along with his wife, lost Rs1.4 crore through fake trading platforms gomcz.com and wuihdjh.com. The couple was added to a WhatsApp group where fraudsters impersonated officials of JM Financial and persuaded them to open bogus portfolio management service accounts. After showing initial fake profits, the scammers blocked withdrawals.
Investigators found that the funds were funneled through several bank accounts, including one belonging to M/s Mavona Logistics Services, before being diverted to Deepak’s account. He was arrested from Jhajjar, Haryana, on August 28.
The second FIR, filed on July 15, involved another victim who fell prey to a YouTube pop-up investment ad. He was added to a WhatsApp group offering fake investment tutorials and fabricated success stories. He eventually transferred Rs26.5 lakh into various accounts, including that of Deepak. When he attempted to withdraw his funds, he was threatened with false legal action.
Police have placed liens on Rs65,057 in the May 2 case and Rs12 lakh in the July 15 case. Multiple bank accounts remain under scrutiny as investigators continue tracing the financial trail and identifying other suspects linked to the syndicate.
The crackdown was led by SP Cyber Crime Geetanjali Khandelwal, IPS, under the supervision of DSP A. Venkatesh and Inspector Eram Rizvi, SHO of the Sector 17 Cyber Crime Police Station. Officials said the arrests mark a crucial step in tackling the surge in digital financial crimes in the region.
