In a major crackdown, Bongaigaon police arrested four individuals involved in a cattle-theft racket on Thursday night, including Abhayapuri-based Hindutva leader Debojit Arya, popularly known as Debojit Hindu.
The arrests followed a vehicle accident in the Rowmari area involving a transport vehicle carrying stolen cattle. Responding promptly, personnel from the Rowmari police outpost under Kajalgaon police station reached the scene and apprehended the suspects.
Authorities recovered eight stolen cattle along with two vehicles used for illegal transportation: a Bolero pick-up (AS15BC0386) and a Bolero (AS26A7617).
Police sources stated that Debojit Arya had allegedly been operating a clandestine cattle-theft network while publicly portraying himself as a Hindutva activist and “protector of cows.” He is accused of running the racket with three youths from Basbari, Bongaigaon — Shariful Islam, Mintu Ali, and Mominul Islam.
The group reportedly stole cattle from various villages and transported them at night for sale. The recent accident exposed their operation, leading to their arrest and the recovery of the stolen cattle.
