WILMINGTON, N.C. — A Wilmington man is in custody following an altercation that resulted in a shooting on South College Road, according to the Wilmington Police Department (WPD).

32-year-old David Gotto was arrested on Tuesday, Dec. 16, after police said he shot a woman on the 4800 block of South College Road. Officers responded just after 9:30 p.m. and quickly identified and detained Gotto, who was called out of his apartment without incident.

Investigators said the incident began as an argument between Gotto and another man in a parking lot. The dispute escalated into a physical altercation at the front entryway of an apartment building, during which Gotto allegedly pulled a firearm from his waistband.

WPD reported: “As the dispute continued, a woman who heard the disturbance opened her apartment door. The suspect began fighting with the other man over the firearm. During the altercation, Gotto struck the other person with the gun.”

The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital.

Police said Gotto retreated into a neighboring apartment and closed the door. Warrants were executed on the involved apartments, where investigators recovered a firearm and magazine used in the incident.

Gotto faces charges of:

Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury

Assault with a deadly weapon

Assault by pointing a gun

Possession of a firearm by a felon

He is being held without bond at the county detention center.
