BEAUMONT, Texas — A Jefferson County jury sentenced 43-year-old David Allen Tovar to 28 years in prison on Monday after finding him guilty of continuous sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony punishable by 25 years to life.

Tovar was convicted last Friday in Judge John Stevens’ courtroom, marking his second child sexual assault conviction. He was previously convicted in 2002 for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl and is a registered sex offender.

The punishment phase of the trial began Monday morning, and by early afternoon, jurors reached their sentencing decision. Tovar was taken into custody following the verdict.

The trial was recessed until next week, when jurors will decide if Tovar will serve a life sentence. It was noted in court that this offense carries no possibility of parole.

Born on April 14, 1982, Tovar faces a lengthy prison term as the justice system continues to hold him accountable for his crimes.
