Albany, NY (WRGB) — A Troy man with a long criminal history has been sentenced to prison for a home burglary that targeted an elderly woman in Watervliet and for a robbery committed in Troy just days earlier.
46-year-old Darrell Carson was sentenced to five years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty to Attempted Burglary in the Second Degree.
The burglary occurred on October 25, 2024, when an 80-year-old woman returned to her home on Fourth Avenue to find a backdoor windowpane shattered and the interior of her house ransacked. Investigators say Carson stole more than $5,000 worth of property, including dozens of bottles of alcohol, fur coats, jewelry, cash, and bonds.
Carson was linked to the crime through DNA evidence collected at multiple points inside the home, according to the Watervliet Police Department.
Just days earlier, Carson committed a robbery in Troy, during which he stole a victim’s backpack and personal belongings. He pleaded guilty to Robbery in the Third Degree for that incident.
In Rensselaer County Court, Carson received a sentence of 2 to 4 years in prison, which will be served concurrently with his Albany County sentence.
With at least 10 prior felony convictions, Carson remains a persistent felony offender under New York State law.
The Watervliet case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Beven Nedumthakady of the Major Crimes Unit under Albany County District Attorney Lee C. Kindlon.
