Delaware State Police arrested 31-year-old Daquan Christy of Newark after an attempted shoplifting turned into a robbery at King Smoke Shop in Newark on January 29, 2025.
At approximately 3:53 p.m., police responded to a report of a robbery at the smoke shop, located at 4614 Ogletown Stanton Road. Investigators found that Christy approached the store employee at the counter and asked about products before grabbing merchandise and attempting to flee without paying.
When the employee tried to stop him, Christy assaulted the employee, punching him multiple times. A physical altercation broke out and continued into the parking lot before Christy fled on foot with the stolen goods.
With assistance from the Delaware Division of Alcohol & Tobacco Enforcement Officers, police quickly located Christy in a nearby park. He was taken into custody without incident. Upon searching him, authorities found the stolen merchandise.
The employee was evaluated for injuries at the scene by EMS but did not require further medical attention.
Christy was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2, where he was charged with robbery, assault, and theft. He was held at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $3,000 secured bond.
