A 45-year-old man, Danladi Usman, appeared in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, facing charges of defrauding a woman of N4 million.

Usman, a resident of Airport Road, Kaduna, is charged with criminal breach of trust and cheating. The prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, stated that the complainant, Jamila Bala, reported the incident to the police on May 4.

According to Mr. Leo, in October 2023, Usman presented himself as a land agent, assuring Bala that he could facilitate the purchase of land along Airport Road. He allegedly collected N2.5 million from her via his Guaranty Trust Bank account.

Additionally, Usman received N500,000 in cash and another N1 million, which was transferred to his First Bank account. In total, he took N4 million from Bala, promising to provide the original land documents, which he subsequently failed to deliver.

Mr. Leo emphasized that Usman’s actions violated the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017. Usman pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted bail to the defendant, set at N500,000, requiring one surety who must be a civil servant of Grade Level 12 residing within the court’s jurisdiction. The magistrate also mandated that the surety’s documents be verified by the prosecutor.
