MARTIN COUNTY, N.C. — A man from Oak City, North Carolina is facing multiple felony charges after attempting to file duplicate auto insurance claims, according to the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDOI).
On April 18, 2025, Daniel A. Cox, of Martin County, allegedly tried to file two duplicate claims under his Progressive Auto Insurance policy. According to the NCDOI’s Criminal Investigations Division, Cox attempted to collect a total of $1,268.63 for two separate auto accidents.
Following the investigation, Cox was arrested on June 6 and later released on a $2,500 unsecured bond, authorities said.
He has been formally charged with:
Two felony counts of insurance fraud
Two felony counts of attempting to obtain property by false pretense
Cox made his first court appearance in Martin County District Court on Monday, June 9, 2025.
Officials from the Department of Insurance continue to stress the importance of reporting insurance fraud, noting that such crimes drive up premium costs for all consumers.
