LANSING — Damarion Joseph McCall, 20, has been formally charged in connection with the 2024 Memorial Day mass shooting in downtown Lansing that left one teenager dead and several others wounded.
McCall faces over a dozen felony charges, including open murder and six counts of assault with intent to murder, according to WILX. The charges follow an extensive investigation by Lansing police after the shooting near Rotary Park in the early hours of May 27, 2024.
At his arraignment, McCall’s bond was set at $500,000 cash/surety. He has not yet posted bond and could potentially be designated a habitual third offender, reports the Lansing State Journal.
Police believe the shooting stemmed from a feud between two groups. Investigators recovered 58 shell casings of multiple calibers at the scene. Seven individuals were shot, including 17-year-old Kylete Owens, who later died from a gunshot wound to the head.
The Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office highlighted the thoroughness of the investigation, noting the use of witness interviews, surveillance footage, and forensic analysis in building the case against McCall.
McCall is scheduled for a probable cause conference on Jan. 9 before 54-A District Court Judge Cynthia Ward, with a preliminary examination set for Jan. 16, according to WLNS. Prosecutors do not anticipate additional arrests in connection with the shooting, which continues to weigh heavily on the Lansing community.
