Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay confirmed Tuesday that his office has completed its review of the case and filed formal charges in the death of Joseph Lee Kaberline.
Topeka Police responded to the 1000 block of NE Poplar Street where they found two adult gunshot victims. Kaberline was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Police quickly identified and arrested 28-year-old Dalton Thompson of Topeka. Authorities say the parties involved were known to each other.
Thompson is now formally charged with:
First-degree murder (premeditated, off-grid felony)
Attempted first-degree murder (Level 1 felony)
Aggravated battery causing great bodily harm (Level 4 felony)
Thompson remains in custody at the Shawnee County Jail with bond set at $1 million. A date for his next court appearance has not yet been announced.
As with all criminal cases, Thompson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
