Dallin Litster Sentenced for 2020 Provo MTC Shooting

Idaho man faces prison for firing at Missionary Center

PROVO, Utah (ABC4) — An Idaho man has been sentenced for opening fire at the Provo Missionary Training Center (MTC) in 2020.

Dallin William Litster, 27, received his sentence on October 7, 2025, after pleading guilty to attempted murder and five counts of felony firearm discharge.

For the attempted murder charge, Litster will serve one to 15 years in prison. Each firearm discharge count carries an additional one to five years. His Utah sentence will begin after he completes a separate prison term in Idaho.

The case stems from an early-morning shooting on August 3, 2020, when Provo Police officers responded to reports of gunfire at the MTC. A guard inside a security booth was injured by shattered glass but was not struck by bullets. Investigators said quick action by the guard likely prevented a fatal outcome.

Video footage captured a man parking a light-colored SUV near the MTC, exiting the vehicle, and firing multiple rounds into the booth. The shots damaged the booth’s glass window, desk, and computer.

Despite early leads, police were unable to identify a suspect until 2024. That year, Litster was arrested in Idaho for an unrelated crime and reportedly told deputies he had “shot at the MTC,” calling it an act of “vandalism.” The Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office alerted Provo Police, leading to his identification as the shooter.

Detectives learned Litster had been a UVU student living in Provo in 2020 and owned a handgun and SUV similar to the one in the footage. His former roommates told investigators that he had “issues” with missionaries and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Litster was officially charged in early 2025 with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and multiple firearm offenses. He was extradited from Idaho to Utah and pleaded guilty on August 27, 2025, more than five years after the shooting.

Following the sentencing, the Provo Police Department issued a statement thanking the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office and BYU Police Department for their cooperation, saying they were “pleased to reach the closure of this case.”
