An assistant professor and PhD holder from Dakshineswar was arrested on Friday for allegedly stealing gold ornaments from a jewellery shop in Barasat. Preliminary police investigations suggest that the accused may suffer from kleptomania, a psychological disorder characterized by compulsive stealing.
The stolen gold ring was reportedly sold to Sheikh Abdul Azim, a resident of Chanditala in Hooghly, who was later arrested in Uttarpara. Both men have been remanded in police custody for five days after being presented before the Barasat court on Friday afternoon.
According to the police, the theft occurred a few days ago at a jewellery store in Amdanga. CCTV footage helped identify the professor as the prime suspect. The accused had visited the store, introduced himself as a professor, and requested to see the ornaments. He left without making a purchase. Later, the shopkeeper discovered that a gold ring was missing and filed a complaint.
Investigators noted that the professor’s family is financially stable, and no apparent motive for the theft emerged. However, early inquiries suggested that kleptomania may be a contributing factor. The police are continuing the investigation.
