THE VILLAGES, Fla. — A 65-year-old woman driving a BMW has been arrested for a string of retail thefts using a skip scanning technique at a Target store in Rolling Acres Plaza.

Cynthia Spradlin, of Fruitland Park, was taken into custody earlier this month and booked into the Lake County Jail on six counts of theft stemming from multiple incidents between May 22 and June 18.

According to the Lady Lake Police Department, Spradlin visited the store six times and used the self-checkout aisle to intentionally avoid scanning certain items in her cart, a method commonly known as skip scanning.

In total, she failed to pay for $566.39 worth of merchandise, which included a range of items such as:

Clothing

Alcoholic beverages

Energy drinks

Hair care products

Cat litter

Children’s books

Diapers

Cleaning supplies

Frozen food

Spradlin was tracked down after using her Target Rewards card, which was linked to her identity, and store surveillance footage that captured her white 2019 BMW X3’s license plate in the parking lot. Surveillance images inside the store also matched her driver’s license photo.

She was released on a $6,000 bond and is awaiting further legal proceedings.
