In a significant wildlife seizure, customs officials at Chennai International Airport intercepted the illegal smuggling of approximately 5,400 red-eared slider turtles, valued at around Rs 75 lakh. The turtles, which are often sought after for their ornamental value, were found in the luggage of two passengers who had arrived on a private flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The passengers have been identified as Ramesh Akash (29) and Tamim Ansari Mohammed Rafique, both residents of Chennai. The duo was under suspicion by customs officials upon their arrival, leading to a detailed inspection of their luggage.

During the search, officials discovered a large number of red-eared slider turtles alive and packed in cardboard boxes. The turtles, known for their exotic appeal, are commonly trafficked for their ornamental purposes.

The suspects were arrested, and the turtles have been handed over to the authorities for proper care and rehabilitation. Customs authorities have initiated further investigations into the smuggling network involved in this illicit trade.
