The Nuh police arrested a Common Services Centre (CSC) operator, Jabir, and his associate Arbaz Khan for allegedly defrauding the government by submitting forged death certificates of MGNREGA job card holders to claim Rs 2.2 lakh in death benefits. The duo colluded with officials from the labour department, with an ongoing investigation to identify the involved personnel.
In 2022, Jabir and Arbaz approached Hanif, a 50-year-old labourer from Dalawas village, promising to enroll him under the state’s Kanyadan Yojana scheme, which offers Rs 51,000 for each daughter’s marriage. Despite providing personal details and fingerprints, Hanif never received benefits, and later discovered his job card was cancelled after a fake death certificate was submitted online.
Police registered a case following Hanif’s complaint and, after extensive probing, apprehended Jabir and Arbaz. Cybercrime authorities filed charges under IPC sections 419, 420, 467, 468, 471, and 120-B.
The accused prepared counterfeit death certificates, opened bank accounts in family members’ names, and routed the benefits to accounts linked to their mobile numbers. With help from some labour department employees, they siphoned funds fraudulently. Police seized two mobile phones and SIM cards during the arrest.
Investigations continue to ascertain the full scope of the scam and identify all involved officials.
