DEER RIVER, Minn. (Northern News Now) — A bizarre and dangerous discovery led to the arrest of two individuals in Itasca County, Minnesota, after deputies uncovered illegal drugs, firearms, and a collection of venomous reptiles during a home search.

Courtney Edstrom, 39, of Nowthen, and Casey Huro, 34, of Maple Lake, were taken into custody on August 27 after a search warrant was executed at a residence in the 500 block of 4th Street SE in Deer River.

During the operation, officers recovered a stolen Glock 45 handgun, multiple magazines, and over 60 rounds of 9mm ammunition. In addition, deputies seized 1.57 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and a host of dangerous wildlife, including:

Cobras

Green mamba

Boa constrictor

Tarantulas

Other venomous species

Some of the reptiles are illegal to possess in Minnesota without special permits. The animals were secured with help from 4X4 Reptile Rescue.

“This was a serious public safety risk,” said Sheriff Joe Dasovich, praising the swift, coordinated response of local law enforcement and specialized teams.

No charges have been officially filed yet, but the case is under review by the Itasca County Attorney’s Office, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The operation included efforts from the AIM Violent Crime Enforcement Team, Deer River Police Department, K9 units, and Itasca County Sheriff’s Office.
