SHAH ALAM — A couple who made headlines after a CCTV video of their alleged theft went viral on social media have been charged in court for stealing over RM111,000 worth of gold jewellery from a local goldsmith shop.
Abdul Hafiz Mohamed Samsudin, 25, and Nur Farwizah Mohd Yusof, 23, pleaded not guilty to a joint charge of theft under Section 380 of the Penal Code read with Section 34, which carries a maximum 10-year prison term and a fine upon conviction.
The alleged theft occurred around 4:00 p.m. on April 26 at Kedai Emas Muslim Gold in Seksyen 7, Shah Alam, where the pair is accused of stealing:
Three 916 gold bracelets weighing 235.7g
Two 916 gold rings weighing 8.38g
Total value: RM111,743.55
The suspects were arrested on May 3 in Bandar Puncak Alam, Kuala Selangor, after spending a week in hiding. Authorities say the stolen jewellery had already been pawned or sold, though much of it was later recovered in Klang.
A 2-minute, 21-second CCTV recording capturing the moment of the theft went viral on TikTok, triggering widespread public attention and aiding police in identifying the culprits.
Shah Alam Police Chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim confirmed that a 26-year-old sales assistant filed a report after noticing jewellery missing post-visit, later confirmed via video footage.
Prosecutor Salman Alfarisi Nawawi proposed RM6,000 bail for each accused. However, the defence requested a lower amount, citing financial hardship:
Hafiz is unemployed and supports his family
Farwizah works as a social media live host with limited means
Assistant registrar Siti Mazrah Mohamad set bail at RM3,500 each and fixed the next case mention for June 11, 2025.
Authorities described the crime as opportunistic, motivated by financial struggles and the couple’s desire to “start a new life.”
