A couple visiting the Block Development Officer (BDO) in Andal to secure a birth certificate for their child were arrested after authorities discovered forged documents and suspicious delays. The couple, identified as Kishor Bala and Parna Bala Adhikary of Milan Nagar West, Nadia district, appeared before the Durgapur court on Friday and were remanded to three days of police custody.
The incident began when the couple presented a seven-month-old male infant to BDO Debanjan Dutta on Thursday, seeking a birth certificate. The request raised suspicions due to a seven-month delay and forged documents, including a false court affidavit claiming the child was born at home.
Following a complaint filed by the BDO at Andal police station, the couple was arrested under Sections 336, 337, 340, and 318 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. During interrogation, the pair admitted they were not the child’s biological parents.
Police are now investigating the child’s background and searching for the biological parents amid concerns of potential child trafficking. The infant remains in protective custody as authorities probe how the couple came into possession of the baby.
