Oxfordshire, UK – A local councillor has been arrested on suspicion of coercive and controlling behaviour following a police response to a domestic incident in Chipping Norton on 14 June.
Adam Clements, a Liberal Democrat who represents the Milton under Wychwood ward on West Oxfordshire District Council, was taken into custody after officers from Thames Valley Police were called to the address.
Police later confirmed that a man in his 30s had been arrested. He has since been bailed pending further investigation.
In a statement, Clements described the allegations as “entirely untrue” and said he is cooperating fully with authorities.
“These allegations arose during the breakdown of my marriage,” he said. “I recognise that this is a difficult time for all involved and do not wish to comment further on private matters. I fully support safeguarding procedures and understand the role of precautionary measures, even when no wrongdoing has occurred.”
The Liberal Democrats announced that Clements has been suspended from the council group and the party while the investigation is ongoing, stating: “We are unable to comment further whilst this is ongoing.”
Clements, who was elected in 2024, has expressed confidence that he will be cleared: “Once the relevant facts have been reviewed, it will be clear there is no case to answer and the matter will be closed.”
He has requested privacy for himself and his family during the investigation.
