Mohali Police arrested contractor Jatinder Pandit on Saturday for filing a fake theft complaint, marking the third such false report in the district within recent days. On July 4, Pandit had called emergency helpline number 112, alleging that some of his workers had stolen his motorcycle and Rs1 lakh cash.
A police team led by SHO Satwinder Singh promptly responded and investigated the claim. It was soon revealed that the complaint was fabricated. Jatinder had actually given his motorcycle to one of his employees, intending to retrieve it later after clearing pending wages. Instead of settling the issue amicably, he falsely accused his workers of theft to exert pressure on them.
Jatinder was immediately booked and arrested. DSP Harsimran Singh Bal highlighted that such false complaints divert police resources from genuine emergencies. “We respond swiftly to distress calls, but fake reports hinder our work on serious crimes,” he said.
Similar false snatching complaints were recently filed in Phase 11 and Phase 1 of Mohali, all disproved by police investigations. Authorities have warned citizens against misusing emergency services and promised strict action against those who file misleading reports.
