In a grim twist to what was initially considered a case of accidental death, the Wadala Truck Terminal police have arrested the wife and son of a police constable for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The case pertains to the death of constable Suryavanshi, who lived in the Pratikshanagar Police Officer’s Colony in Sion (East).
The arrested individuals have been identified as Smita Suryavanshi (38) and Pratik Suryavanshi (20). They were produced in court on Tuesday and remanded to police custody.
The incident occurred in May, when Suryavanshi reportedly punched a windowpane in a fit of rage during an argument with his wife over financial matters. The injury led to severe bleeding, but despite witnessing the incident, his wife and son failed to take him to the hospital. He died on the spot due to excessive blood loss.
Initially, the police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) after finding a suicide note, where the constable claimed no one was responsible for his actions. However, the case took a turn when Suryavanshi’s elder brother approached authorities with allegations of domestic abuse and negligence.
Subsequent investigation revealed that while the injury may have been self-inflicted, the failure of the wife and son to act and provide life-saving help was intentional and fatal. This led to their arrest on charges of culpable homicide.
