A dedicated police constable lost his life in the line of duty during an operation to trace a suspect in a drug-related case. Constable K K Sajeesh (40), a member of a special police team under Bekal DySP, tragically died when the vehicle he was traveling in collided with a tipper lorry early Friday morning at Chengala Fourth Mile, on the outskirts of Kasargod city.
The accident took place around 2:45 AM when the police car attempted to enter a service road through an underpass. A tipper lorry, reportedly coming from Cherkala towards Kasargod, struck the vehicle. Both Sajeesh and fellow officer Subhash Chandra were rushed to Chengala Hospital, where Sajeesh was declared dead. Subhash is currently undergoing treatment.
The officers were en route to locate Dr. Muhammad Suneer, a dentist from Kannur, who is the second accused in a drug case. On Thursday evening, Melparamba Police had seized 3.28 grams of MDMA and 10.65 grams of ganja from a car, arresting Ahammed Kabir of Chattanchal, while Dr. Suneer managed to escape.
A case has been registered against the tipper lorry driver involved in the crash.
Following a post-mortem at Kasargod General Hospital, Sajeesh’s body will be kept at the District Superintendent’s Office for colleagues and the public to pay their last respects. Later in the evening, the body will be taken to his native village Mayichchi in Cheruvathur for final rites.
