In a major drug bust, Anchal police have arrested Shiju (42), a local Congress leader, and Sajan Raj for possessing 85 grams of MDMA during a vehicle check on Bypass Road on Monday night. The duo was found smuggling drugs under the pretext of a vegetable business run by Sajan.
The operation began after a tip-off about the pair’s involvement in drug trafficking. Over several days, the police conducted surveillance, which led to the interception of Shiju in an auto rickshaw, where officers found 4 grams of MDMA in his pocket. Further investigation led to a raid at Sajan Raj’s residence, resulting in the seizure of 81 grams of the drug.
The accused reportedly smuggled drugs into Kerala under the guise of sourcing vegetables from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Their primary customers included school and college students. The recent arrest of a college student in possession of MDMA provided crucial leads for the police, which ultimately led them to the accused.
The operation was conducted by the Anchal police and the Dansaf team, under the direction of Kollam rural SP. Both Shiju and Sajan Raj have been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The investigation is ongoing.
