A 21-year-old college student, Surjyakant Sethy, brutally killed his parents and sister early Tuesday morning in Jagatsinghpur district, Odisha. The attack reportedly stemmed from family opposition to his addiction to online gaming.

The tragic incident took place at Jayabada Sethi Sahi around 3 AM, where Surjyakant allegedly used stones and other hard objects to fatally injure his father, Prasant Sethy (65), mother Kanaklata (62), and sister Rosalin (25). Superintendent of Police Bhawani Sankar Udgata confirmed the details and stated that Surjyakant was arrested after hiding nearby.

According to preliminary investigations, the accused was angered by his family’s disapproval of his excessive mobile gaming. Jagatsinghpur Police Station Inspector-in-Charge Prabhas Sahu mentioned that mental health issues might have played a role in the case.

Local MLA Amarendra Das noted that the family had previously approached him regarding a land dispute, but villagers reported that Surjyakant admitted to the killings.

A police and scientific investigation team led by the Superintendent of Police is conducting further inquiries. The victims’ bodies were sent for post-mortem examinations to determine the exact cause of death.
