Cold Justice Team Helps Solve 2003 Murder of Navy Veteran David Vanderzee
Wife and best friend arrested after decades-old case is reopened
Two people have been arrested in connection with the 2003 execution-style murder of David Vanderzee, thanks to a renewed investigation by the Oxygen series Cold Justice.
Vanderzee, a 47-year-old Navy veteran, was shot five times in the back of the head while preparing dinner in his home in Randall, Wisconsin. The case had gone cold for over 20 years — until now.
In the Season 8 premiere of Cold Justice, titled “Newlywed Nightmare”, investigators Kelly Siegler and Steve Spignola, along with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, took a new look at the crime.
Their investigation led to the arrest of Roxanna Vanderzee-Collins (David’s wife of just two months at the time) and John Viskocil, David’s longtime best friend.
Detectives say there was no sign of forced entry, suggesting the killer was someone David trusted. The steak and shrimp he was cooking were still warm when Roxanna returned home and found his body.
David’s mother had spent years bringing baked goods to local detectives, hoping her son’s case wouldn’t be forgotten. Meanwhile, David’s reputation in the community had made the original investigation difficult — he was known to be hot-tempered and had financial issues.
Now, with the help of Cold Justice, his family finally sees a step toward closure.
