A Baton Rouge man has been arrested nearly two years after allegedly stealing an iPad from a home and using it to commit multiple instances of identity theft, including transferring thousands of dollars to himself.
Cody Moore, 35, is accused of burglarizing a home on Mammoth Drive in December 2022 and stealing an iPad that was not protected by a password. Police say that between January and May 2023, Moore used the stolen device to access the owner’s bank accounts and apply for numerous loans in the owner’s name.
The identity theft began on January 25, 2023, when Moore transferred $850 and $800 from the owner’s bank accounts. He also moved $8,000 from the owner’s savings to their checking account, and $750 was transferred from a personal savings account into the owner’s business account.
In total, there were 63 incidents in which Moore used the stolen iPad to open two Verizon cell phone accounts, apply for over 20 payday loans, and commit other fraudulent acts. Authorities later discovered that Moore and his accomplices had been exchanging photos of the victim’s bank statements to assist in the scheme.
Moore was arrested on Tuesday and is facing 63 counts of identity theft, one count of simple burglary, and one count of illegal transmission of monetary funds.
