CALERA, Ala. — Cody Blake Wilson was arrested following a dangerous high-speed police chase on July 2 that left a state trooper and three police officers injured, according to officials.

The pursuit began in Pelham when Wilson fled after a detective tried to make contact. Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the chase, which forced the closure of Interstate 65 Northbound near mile marker 233.

Wilson’s vehicle eventually crashed behind a fast-food restaurant in Calera, where officers took him into custody. During the arrest, two Calera police officers suffered minor injuries, including one who was reportedly stabbed and bitten by Wilson. An Alabama State Trooper was also hurt after being hit by Wilson’s car while deploying spike strips to stop the chase.

Police Chief David Hyche of Calera expressed relief that the trooper’s injuries were not more severe, noting concerns about possible communicable diseases after the trooper was stabbed with a needle.

Wilson is not new to law enforcement; Chief Hyche stated he has had previous encounters with Wilson, including another chase where Wilson damaged a police vehicle.

Wilson now faces serious charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault, eluding police, second-degree assault, receiving stolen property, escape, and theft. After being taken to Shelby Baptist Medical Center, Wilson tried to escape again by attempting to steal an ambulance while handcuffed. Pelham officers quickly stopped him, although one officer sustained a minor shoulder injury in the process.

All injured officers are expected to recover fully. However, police chiefs Hyche and Pelham’s Edward Delmore voiced concerns over repeat offenders like Wilson putting officers and the public at risk. Delmore suggested policy reforms to keep violent suspects in custody until trial.

Wilson remains held without bond at Shelby County Jail as authorities continue to monitor the case.
