In a significant operation against drug trafficking, a joint team of North Tripura Police and the GST Enforcement Wing, North Tripura, seized a massive consignment of contraband codeine-based cough syrup and arrested two individuals at the Churaibari Sales Tax Gate on Wednesday evening.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the enforcement agencies intercepted a truck bearing registration number WB 53 M 8596 at around 4:00 pm on January 7. Suspecting the vehicle was transporting illegal substances, officials conducted a detailed inspection following all legal protocols.

The search was carried out in the presence of a magistrate and independent witnesses, during which authorities recovered 12,600 bottles of Eskuf, a codeine-based cough syrup. The seized consignment is estimated to be worth approximately Rs1.26 crore in the illegal market.

The truck’s driver and helper, identified as Panjab Sheikh and Based Sheikh, both residents of Murshidabad district in West Bengal, were taken into custody in connection with the seizure. Further investigation is underway to determine the source and intended destination of the consignment, as well as possible links to larger drug trafficking networks.
