Team Summit has terminated ski coach Jared Hedges, 48, after his March 22 arrest in Taos, New Mexico, on felony charges related to the sexual assault of a minor during a ski competition, according to a statement from the Summit County-based team.
The Taos County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies arrested Hedges at Taos Ski Valley on charges of criminal sexual penetration of a minor and criminal sexual contact. He was transported to the Taos County Adult Detention Center following his arrest.
Team Summit’s executive director, C.B. Bechtel, expressed shock and concern over the allegations, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to athlete safety. The team has reported the incident to the U.S. Center for SafeSport, as required by U.S. Ski & Snowboard, and has fired Hedges from his coaching position.
SafeSport, which oversees safety regulations for youth sports, has temporarily suspended Hedges, according to its website.
Bechtel added that Team Summit has been in contact with the victim’s family and other team members who traveled to the Taos competition. A professional therapist has been made available for athletes, families, and staff.
“We are fully cooperating with local authorities, SafeSport, and other relevant agencies in their investigation,” Bechtel said in the statement.
Hedges has not yet issued a public statement or responded to media requests for comment.
