LONDON, UK – Clifton George, 44, has been charged with the murder of Annabel Rook, a 46-year-old mother of two and charity co-founder, following a tragic domestic-related incident in Stoke Newington on Tuesday morning.

Ms. Rook was found with fatal stab wounds at her home on Dumont Road, where police had responded to reports of a gas explosion at approximately 4:57 a.m. The explosion blew out the front bay window of the home, scattering debris across the street. Two children, aged seven and nine, were taken to hospital as a precaution, but were reportedly not inside the house when the blast occurred.

George, who also lived on Dumont Road, was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital with self-inflicted slash injuries. He was later released into police custody and has now been charged with murder and arson with intent to endanger life. He appeared in Thames Magistrates’ Court today and has been remanded in custody.

Ms. Rook was well-known in the community as a co-founder of MamaSuze CIC, a London-based charity that supported refugee and migrant women, including survivors of gender-based violence. Her family described her as a “wonderful woman” who devoted her life to helping the vulnerable, whether in refugee camps abroad or through community outreach at home.

In a statement, her family said:

“We have lost our beautiful daughter, sister, friend, and mother. Annabel was a truly wonderful woman. She gave her life to helping the vulnerable and the disadvantaged… We would really appreciate it if our privacy could be respected.”

Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke of the Central East BCU urged the public to avoid speculation, adding:

“Our thoughts continue to remain with the family and friends of Annabel as they navigate this devastating loss.”

Six fire engines and 40 firefighters responded to the explosion, which remains under investigation as part of the broader criminal inquiry.
