Cleveland Broadie Charged With Murder in Wife’s AIDS Death

Man accused of hiding HIV status from wife and others

by Amelia Crawford

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. (WKRC) — A Georgia man is facing murder charges after allegedly infecting his wife with HIV and never informing her of his status, ultimately leading to her death from AIDS.

According to reports from the victim’s family, Denise Broadie died in April 2022 after a rapid decline in health, just days after being diagnosed with AIDS. Her family became suspicious and later alleged that her husband, Cleveland Broadie, knowingly withheld his HIV-positive status, which he had reportedly been aware of since 2006.

Denise, who had previously survived cancer twice, had remained sick despite beating the disease. Her family believes that if she had been diagnosed with HIV earlier, her life may have been saved.

“There is malice in what [Cleveland] did,” said Denise’s daughter, Karen Young. “He could have told her. He took away her right to choose.”

In 2023, Cleveland Broadie was charged with three counts of reckless conduct after multiple other women came forward, claiming he had also infected them without disclosure. Prosecutors say he failed to inform any of his sexual partners about his HIV status.

A Rockdale County grand jury later indicted Broadie on charges of malice murder and felony murder related to Denise’s death. The case raises serious questions about consent, disclosure, and the legal consequences of knowingly transmitting HIV.
