A violent family clash in Ganpat Patil Nagar slum, Dahisar (W), led to the deaths of three people on Sunday. The MHB Colony police arrested one person from one of the families, while a 16-year-old minor from the other household was taken into custody and transferred to the Dongri correctional facility.
The deceased individuals were identified as Hamid Sheikh (49), Ram Gupta (50), and Arvind Gupta (23). According to the police, the Sheikh and Gupta families had ongoing disputes over minor issues since 2022.
On Monday, the police arrested Amit Gupta, son of Ram Gupta, and sent Hamid Sheikh’s 16-year-old son to the correctional facility. DCP (Zone XI) Anand Bhoite confirmed that murder charges have been filed against both families.
The conflict started near Gali No. 14 in Ganpat Patil Nagar, where Ram Gupta’s coconut stall was located. Hamid Sheikh, allegedly intoxicated, confronted Ram Gupta at the stall. Both families summoned their sons, leading to a violent clash involving sharp weapons.
Each family blamed the other for escalating the situation. A member of the Gupta family told TOI, “The Sheikh family has been causing problems since 2022. On Sunday, things went too far when Sheikh came drunk and started a commotion near the stall.”
Sheikh’s family members, however, blamed Gupta for blowing the matter out of proportion. A witness told TOI, “This was a long-standing dispute over petty issues, and on Sunday, it turned into a violent clash.”
The confrontation, which occurred at around 4:30 pm on Sunday, saw Amar, Arvind, and Amit Gupta from the Gupta family face off against Hamid Sheikh and his sons Armaan and Hasan Sheikh. While Ram Gupta, Arvind Gupta, and Hamid Sheikh died in the clash, Amar Gupta, Amit Gupta, Armaan Sheikh, and Hasan Sheikh suffered injuries.
The police are continuing their investigation into the violent incident, with further legal proceedings expected.
