ANDERSON COUNTY, S.C. – Christopher Spear, 45, was arrested after attempting to scam a local furniture store, Hampton Furniture, out of thousands of dollars’ worth of goods. According to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, Spear had an outstanding balance of more than $3,400 for an order placed at the store on Whitehall Road.

Spear had ordered a sectional sofa, armless chairs, an ottoman, and a cocktail table, agreeing to pay the store upon delivery. However, when the furniture was delivered, Spear failed to show up with the payment. The delivery driver informed the store that Spear was on his way to pay, but he never arrived.

Spear later claimed he would leave a check in the store’s Dropbox, but when the check did not show up, he said it had been stolen. Deputies also found that his debit card was declined when he attempted payment.

Spear was arrested and charged with breach of trust and obtaining property under false pretenses. This is not his first run-in with the law—he was previously charged in May with forgery, conspiracy, and obtaining property under false pretenses. He is currently being held at the Anderson County Detention Center.
