LEONARDTOWN, MD — Christina Lee Calero, 46, of Leonardtown, was arrested on August 19, 2025, and charged with misdemeanor theft and disorderly conduct after an incident at a JCPenney in California, Maryland.
Authorities say Calero attempted to steal about $194.97 worth of merchandise, including a necklace and a pair of women’s shoes. Store employees reportedly saw her concealing the items in her purse and alerted law enforcement.
Deputies arrived to find Calero being detained. According to charging documents, she had filled a shopping cart but did not purchase anything before attempting to leave. A necklace fell from her purse during questioning, and she was allegedly wearing the stolen shoes, still tagged.
When informed her bag would be searched, Calero became loud and uncooperative, prompting officers to physically restrain her. Witnesses say her behavior disrupted nearby customers.
Calero initially gave conflicting accounts regarding the shoes but later admitted to taking the necklace. She was released on a $1,000 unsecured bond and is being represented by the St. Mary’s County Public Defender’s Office. Her trial is set for September 18, 2025, in St. Mary’s County District Court.
