The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has conducted a wave of nationwide drug interdiction operations, resulting in the arrest of a Chinese businessman and an 80-year-old Nigerian grandmother, along with the seizure of a significant quantity of illicit substances.

According to Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Liang Tak You, a Chinese national naturalized in Malaysia, was arrested on Friday at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. He had arrived from Bangkok via Dubai aboard an Emirates Airline flight.

“The suspect picked up two suitcases containing 50 parcels of ‘Loud’, a potent synthetic cannabis strain, weighing 26.10 kg, in Thailand,” Babafemi revealed.

“NDLEA operatives, acting on intelligence, monitored his movements and apprehended him as he exited the airport.”

In a separate raid in Calabar, Cross River State, 80-year-old Grace Ekpeme was arrested on Saturday, July 26, at her residence on Edet-Nsa Street in Base Site. She was allegedly caught with over 3kg of skunk, another form of cannabis, based on intelligence linking her to drug dealing activities.

The agency reported that some of the seized cannabis, including the strain known as Colorado, was hidden in food packaging such as moi-moi sachets and imported canned food to evade detection.

The NDLEA emphasized its commitment to clamping down on drug trafficking regardless of age or nationality, highlighting its evolving intelligence and airport surveillance systems.
