MANILA — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported the arrest of a Chinese national wanted for fraud in his home country.
BI tourist visa section chief Raymond Remigio said Sun Jianqing, 30, was detained after attempting to extend his visa at the bureau’s main office in Intramuros, Manila, on December 9. Sun had been in the Philippines for about nine months, arriving on February 23.
Frontline officers recognized his name on the BI’s list of wanted criminals. Sun is the subject of a blacklist order issued earlier this year following notification from Chinese authorities regarding his crimes.
The Liangqing Branch of Nanning Municipal Public Security Bureau issued a detention warrant against him on June 16 for telecommunication fraud, in violation of Chinese law. Sun is reportedly a member of a telecommunication criminal organization that operated under the guise of an investment and financial management company, targeting Chinese citizens.
After verifying his identity, Sun was immediately arrested by the BI’s fugitive search unit and taken to the agency’s holding facility following booking and medical procedures.
BI Commissioner Joel Viado said:
“We will not allow these scammers and fraudsters to use the Philippines to hide liability from their crimes. We will continue working with our counterparts abroad to swiftly locate and arrest these fugitives.”
Once deported, Sun will be included in the BI’s blacklist, barring him from re-entering the Philippines.
