Chennai Police Arrest 228 in 110 Drug Cases This Year

Major busts include ganja, synthetic drugs, and illegal tobacco

The Greater Chennai Police have made significant strides in combating drug crimes this year, arresting 228 individuals in 110 drug-related cases, including 28 people from other states.

The Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit was responsible for arresting 170 suspects in 91 ganja-related cases, seizing a total of 285 kg of cannabis. Additionally, authorities busted 7 cases involving the illegal sale of drug tablets, arresting 13 people and confiscating 1,554 tablets.

Six new synthetic drug networks were uncovered within Chennai’s jurisdiction, leading to the arrest of 45 accused in 12 cases. The seized drugs included 133 grams of methamphetamine, 1,541 grams of methaqualone, 46.56 grams of heroin, and 49 grams of cocaine.

Following Commissioner A Arun’s directives, 16 of those arrested in May were booked under the stringent Goondas Act.

In a separate operation, Choolaimedu police arrested S Prajwal Kumar (27) and S Murugan (32) for possessing banned tobacco products, seizing 15.9 kg of gutka.

Meanwhile, the Triplicane police arrested Abdul Rawab (35) and Mohammed Ashwar (39) from Ramanathapuram district for hoarding approximately 15,000 packs of illegally imported cigarettes and vapes. The stock was found hidden near a mansion following a search.

These extensive operations highlight Chennai Police’s ongoing commitment to curbing drug trafficking and related illegal activities across the city.
