by Ananya Mehta

A father-daughter duo has been arrested by the Chennai Police for allegedly running a fake overseas job racket, cheating at least 25 people of Rs48.5 lakh through a bogus manpower agency based in Arumbakkam.

The accused have been identified as:

S Venkatesan (50), of Pattabiram

Monisha (20), his daughter

They were arrested on Monday, following a complaint by Arockiaraj, a resident of Arumbakkam. According to the complaint, in November 2023, Arockiaraj met Venkatesan, Monisha, and an associate named Gnanasundari at their office. They promised him a job abroad and collected his passport and other documents.

To appear credible, the accused allegedly used fake user feedback and later persuaded Arockiaraj to refer more people. Trusting them, he introduced them to 24 others from his native village, with the promise of jobs in Hungary and the Czech Republic.

However, the promised jobs never materialized, and neither were the victims refunded. In total, Rs48.5 lakh was allegedly collected under false pretenses.

Police said the accused had also operated a similar office in Coimbatore, and more victims are expected to come forward.

Both Venkatesan and Monisha have been remanded to judicial custody, while the investigation is ongoing.
