In a significant drug bust, the Central Intelligence Unit of the Enforcement Bureau Police seized two kilograms of cocaine, valued at approximately Rs 6 crore. The operation, which took place across two key locations in Chennai, led to the arrest of eight individuals linked to a large drug trafficking network. The police also seized a car and five mobile phones during the operation.
The breakthrough came in the St. Thomas Mount area, where five suspects, all from Keelakarai in Ramanathapuram district, were arrested with one kilogram of cocaine. Upon interrogation, the suspects revealed their connections to three more accomplices operating from the Koyambedu area in Chennai.
Investigators identified Mahendran, a forest guard from Sayalgudi, as the prime accused. He allegedly received one kilogram of cocaine from Pandi, a waste collector, who claimed to have found the drug on the Ramanathapuram seashore during a routine waste collection. Another accused, Palaneeswaran, also claimed to have found a kilogram of cocaine washed ashore in the same manner.
Further investigation revealed that Kasim masterminded the plan to sell the cocaine in Chennai for a “lump sum amount,” with the help of his co-conspirators: Mohamed Mubarak, Edward Sam, Mohamad Idris, and Kaja Mohaideen.
While the exact origins of the cocaine are still unclear, authorities have launched an ongoing investigation to trace its source and further unravel the drug trafficking network operating across multiple regions.
