GREAT MILLS, Md. — A Great Mills man, 40-year-old Chee Wei Gary Tan, is being held without bond after his arrest on charges of first-degree rape and assault stemming from a violent domestic incident.
Deputies responded on May 28 to a residence on Taras Court following a report of domestic assault. Upon arrival, they spoke with Tan’s wife, who alleged that Tan physically and sexually assaulted her after an argument.
The victim told investigators that Tan became violent after she refused intercourse. She reported being struck multiple times in the face and strangled to the point of difficulty breathing. Deputies observed bruises on both sides of her mouth, red cheeks, a bloody nose, and neck marks consistent with strangulation. She also said the assault involved forced intercourse.
Tan was arrested at the scene. In a follow-up interview, he admitted to the intercourse and acknowledged the argument, also admitting to grabbing the victim’s throat.
Tan faces felony charges of first-degree rape, punishable by up to life imprisonment when physical injury is involved. He is also charged with first-degree assault, carrying a maximum penalty of 25 years, and second-degree assault, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 10 years in jail and/or a $2,500 fine.
At a bond hearing on May 29, Judge Karen Christy Holt Chesser ordered Tan held without bond at the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 26, 2025, at St. Mary’s County District Court.
