FORT MILL, S.C. (WBTV) – A Charlotte man was arrested on Saturday afternoon after attempting an armed robbery at a store in Fort Mill, which led to a violent altercation with store employees, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred on January 4 around 3 p.m. at the Stateline Elite store along Charlotte Highway 521.

Datarius Marques Vaughn-McHam, 27, was charged with:

Attempted Murder
Armed Robbery
Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Violent Crime
According to witnesses, Vaughn-McHam grabbed two “high-dollar tequila” cases and attempted to leave the store without paying. At the time of the robbery attempt, the store had five employees and four customers inside.

Two employees intervened in the robbery. One worker physically restrained Vaughn-McHam, while the other blocked the exit. During the struggle, Vaughn-McHam allegedly pulled a 9mm pistol from his pocket, and a fight broke out over control of the weapon.

During the scuffle, two shots were fired, though neither struck anyone. A customer assisted the employees in restraining Vaughn-McHam until backup arrived. When authorities arrived on the scene, they took Vaughn-McHam into custody, finding he had a bloody nose. One of the workers was also reportedly bitten during the altercation, but no other injuries were reported.
