Chesterton, Indiana – Charles W. Curry, 46, of Chesterton, was arrested on Saturday morning by the Porter County Sheriff’s Office on an auto theft charge. Curry, who was wanted in multiple states, was stopped at the Ripley Street exit ramp for Interstate 94 after his vehicle was identified by a Flock camera license plate reader.
The 2014 Dodge Caravan he was driving had been reported stolen from a car lot in Calumet Park, Illinois. Although Curry claimed to have permission from a man named “Brian” to drive the vehicle, further investigation revealed that Curry had stolen the car in a staged incident three months earlier.
Video surveillance footage showed Curry dressed as a police officer, with a vest and gun, taking the keys to the Dodge Caravan and driving off the lot without authorization.
In addition to the new auto theft charge, Curry was also wanted on an intimidation charge in Porter Superior Court and had an outstanding probation violation in Lake County. He is also facing a theft charge from Cook County, Illinois, and a parole violation case in Michigan related to a 2022 auto theft conviction. Curry has a history of auto theft arrests.
He is currently being held in the Porter County Jail.
