JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. — Two Jefferson County men are facing multiple charges after allegedly stealing and selling over $1,400 worth of copper and brass radiators from a McCalmont Township property.
Charles McCutcheon III, 36, of Sigel, and Andrew Birch, 37, of Summerville, were identified and charged following a police investigation that began May 6. Troopers responded to a home on Walnut Street after the homeowner reported a large quantity of scrap metal missing between April and early May.
At the scene, police found a heater core and a roll of copper on a nearby property, within view of a local post office. A post office employee recalled seeing a white truck parked in the area during the suspected timeframe.
On May 19, police contacted scrap metal recycling centers and described the stolen items. One location recognized the materials and confirmed that Birch had sold a large number of radiators there for $494.40. A second facility confirmed similar items had been sold on May 1 for $922.25.
On July 1, Birch admitted to police that he and McCutcheon had stolen the radiators and sold them to the scrap yards. In total, the stolen items were sold for $1,416.65.
Both men are charged with burglary, criminal trespass, and theft by unlawful taking. Preliminary hearings are scheduled for Sept. 9.
