by Sophia Bennett

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Charles Campbell, 47, is now in custody and facing charges for auto theft after being caught driving a woman’s stolen car.

On March 9, the woman reported her 2013 Hyundai Elantra missing from her driveway. Two days later, while driving her other car, she spotted her stolen Hyundai at a Valero Gas Station on North Hollywood Street. The woman quickly blocked the car in and contacted police.

Campbell, who was driving the car, was arrested at the scene. He told authorities he didn’t steal the vehicle but had found it running and unoccupied behind a house in Frayser at around 6 a.m. that morning. Although he noticed the steering column had been tampered with, he decided to drive the car anyway.

Police reports indicate that Campbell drove around, visiting a liquor store before stopping at the gas station where he was apprehended.

Campbell is facing Theft of Property – Auto $10,000-$60,000 charges, and while his bond has not been set, he is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.
