Thane businessman used bogus ITC to cheat government

by Ananya Mehta

Thane GST officials have arrested Chandan Lakhara, the owner of Moon Trader, for evading taxes worth Rs17.48 crore. Authorities found that Lakhara had shown fake purchases and sales to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) exceeding ₹8.74 crore.

Moon Trader, registered under the Maharashtra Goods and Service Tax Act, 2017, falsely claimed purchases without actually acquiring any goods or services. This fraudulent practice caused a substantial revenue loss to the government.

Investigations revealed that the company never possessed the goods it claimed. Lakhara also failed to produce any supporting documents and provided false information to evade taxes deliberately, according to GST officials.

Authorities continue to examine the case for further irregularities and possible accomplices involved in the tax evasion scheme.
