In a chilling case that has sent shockwaves through the region, police have arrested Chaman Devi (28) and her lover Monu Sharma (20) for allegedly murdering her husband Vijay Chavan (34) and burying his body under floor tiles at their residence in Gangnipada, Nallasopara.
The case was cracked on Tuesday, two weeks after Chavan was reported missing. The Pelhar police, under the MBVV (Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar) jurisdiction, discovered the decomposed body under recently laid tiles at the couple’s home, following a complaint from Chavan’s family.
Chavan’s brothers had become suspicious after repeated failed attempts to contact him. When they visited his home, they found new tiles on the floor and a foul odour. On removing the tiles, they made the horrifying discovery and immediately informed the police.
Police registered an FIR under Sections 103 (murder), 238 (destruction of evidence), and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A search was launched, and both accused were traced to Hadapsar in Pune, approximately 270 km away, and arrested on Tuesday evening.
According to ACP Bajrang Desai, the motive for the murder is still under investigation. Neighbours confirmed that Chavan had not been seen since July 10, and his wife disappeared on July 19, the same day his brothers had tried to reach her.
Senior Inspector Jitendra Vankoti of Pelhar police stated that the body was exhumed in the presence of forensic experts and local authorities.
Police suspect that Chaman Devi and Sharma, who were allegedly in a relationship, conspired to kill Chavan and dispose of his body. Further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and motive.
