A Lee County man was arrested after allegedly stealing a car from a driveway and leading authorities on a high-speed chase that reached more than 120 mph.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when a San Carlos Park resident briefly left a 2016 Mustang running and unlocked in their driveway while going inside their home. When the owner returned moments later, the vehicle had been stolen.
Authorities identified the suspect as Cesar Ruelas, 38. Officials say he took the vehicle and later encountered troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol, who attempted a traffic stop. Instead of stopping, Ruelas allegedly sped away while driving under the influence.
Sheriff Carmine Marceno said the suspect fled at speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour before crashing the stolen Mustang in North Fort Myers. After the crash, Ruelas attempted to escape on foot but was quickly tracked down and arrested by a K-9 unit.
Authorities said Ruelas faces multiple charges, including DUI, grand theft auto, hit-and-run, and fleeing from law enforcement. Officials also reminded residents to avoid leaving vehicles running and unlocked, noting that such opportunities can make theft easier for criminals.
