CEDAR RAPIDS — A 19-year-old man was arrested Thursday for allegedly starting a trash can fire and several smaller fires at Greene Square Park while carrying a sword.

Damien Brummet faces charges of second-degree arson and third-degree criminal mischief after security footage showed him lighting alcohol wipes on fire and tossing them into a trash can Tuesday night.

According to the criminal complaint, Brummet sprayed the fire with spray paint to make it larger, then threw the can into the flames, causing an explosion that sent sparks and debris flying.

Police were called around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday after witnesses reported the trash can fire and described the suspect carrying a sword. Officers found Brummet one block north of the park matching the description.

Investigators discovered several other small fires started with alcohol wipes, including a cereal box lit next to a tree — an apparent attempt to set the tree on fire. The damage caused totals approximately $884.

“This area is frequently used by the unhoused, and it is not unusual for people to be sleeping or occupying the area around this receptacle,” the complaint notes. “This intentional act not only damaged property but placed himself and others at risk of injury. Knowingly placing explosive items into a fire also places an inherent risk on emergency responders.”

Brummet’s first court appearance is scheduled for Friday. He is currently being held on a $15,000 bond.
